José Abad MD

Dr. Abad was born in Puerto Rico to a Spanish family. He migrated to Amherst, Massachusetts at a young age. He graduated from Amherst College as an English major with an interest in physician-written poetry. Amherst College awarded him the John Woodruff Simpson Fellowship for attending UMass Chan Medical School. He ultimately matched at UC Davis Health Family Medicine Residency in Sacramento, California. He served as chief resident in his final year and received both the AAFP Outstanding Educator Award and STFM Resident Teacher Award. Initially, he was part of the faculty at UC Davis Family Medicine but transitioned to a community physician with strong ties to undergraduate medical teaching in both ‘doctoring’ and ‘culture in medicine’ courses.  

During the COVID-19 pandemic, and after finally starting a family; he joined UPMC as a PCP for a community-based outpatient office. He moved to be closer to his wife’s family in Pittsburgh. With extensive informatics experience, he became an eRecord Medical Director for Community Medicine Inc. and supported physicians and APPs at the elbow with specialized EHR training. Eventually, he became a Medical Director of Informatics and joined the Department of Family Medicine as the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and Analytics.

Dr. Abad's clinical interests include preventive medicine, office-based procedures, primary care dermatology, medical narrative, and palliative care. He also is very interested in clinical informatics, particularly how it relates to physician well-being. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Abad currently lives with his wife and daughter in Butler County. He enjoys cinema, games, wine, traveling, outdoor activities including scuba and skiing, and spending time with family.
